This may be a bit of a long shot, but here goes...

Fatima is in the menders having the clutch replaced as it's been slipping. My mechanic called me today to say they were having some problems.

Full clutch kit has gone in, and works fine - until the cover goes back on. As it's screwed down, the thrust bearing pushes on the clutch and spreads the plates, making it slip. There are two possible culprits:

1. The pushrod is too long, being the wrong one for the bike.
2. The clutch release bearing is too thick, being the wrong one for the bike.

Mine is a 1995 Version R which I think is a FIIIS.

Does anyone happen to know the correct dimensions for each part, or could easily measure parts from a dismantled bike? Or has anyone else had this problem and can shed some light on it?

My mechanic thinks that someone has bodged the slipping clutch before, and with the new clutch in the total thickness of the assembly is too much, given that the pushrod and/or thrust bearing has been replaced with a bigger one.

(I've sent my mechanic the pdf parts list in case he needs to order some bits.)

Any ideas? Please?

THanks.

Alex.

Could be something else? EG I replaced my diversion clutch the other weekend, and Fowlers sent me the springs from the fiche... which were a replacement part number from the original, as listed by Yamaha. Yamaha got it wrong - the springs were too short.

Also, have they definitely assembled the clutch pushrod right? It can slip out when you line up the cover, as there is nothing to positively hold it in place until it's all assembled.

I really can't imagine someone with the nouse to take it all apart would bodge it with a longer pushrod (for a start how on earth would you work out which part you needed??) instead of changing the plates which aren't that expensive. By opening up you already have the job of stripping and replacing the gasket, which is most of the work.

THanks for the reply a morti.

It turned out that someone had added an extra spacer that doesn't appear on the Honda schematics, and the pushrod was too long! By removing the spacer and swapping the pushrod for the shorter version, it all works fine!

The old clutch was completely shagged, no grooves left on the friction plates and the metal plates were completely discoloured from the heat generated by slippage!
