For those of you who may have let it slip your mind

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7200066.stm

Think the powers that be may pay particular attention to bikes with news like this!

I've been guilty of riding with no tax... however I was actually totally ignorant to it!

It's a darn bit cheaper to tax a bike than a car, so it's worth doing.

Thanks for the heads up!

Mine holder is on the frame just above the choke. Do know a mate of mine who didn't display either, just kept his disc in his wallet ready to show if needed

40% of bikes not taxed?? Thats quite shocking.

Worse, is that the Police will now be all over bikers because of these idiots that refuse to pay their tax.

My Tax discs are in the 'bike' drawer in my office filing cabinet and have been for several years. I dont display them on the bikes as I dont like the look of them, and some idiot may be tempted to steal it.

It is very, very rare the Police look for or ask to see a tax disc these days, the database is far more useful to them than a soggy bit of paper on a bike that may or may not be real!

And yes, bike tax is so cheap, Its not worth not having!

I find the idea of road tax ridiculous anyway. they should abolish it and add a few more pence onto fuel. that way its a Pay as you Go system, instead of someone who does 100 miles a year paying the same as a rep who does 30,000 a year!

I would bet that a considerable amount of those untaxed bikes are sitting in the back of a garage or shed and have never been used on the road illegally.
I know lots of people with old bikes sitting in their garage gattering rust as they have lost interest in them. They have just never gotten around to getting a Sorn on them.
I keep my FZR's road tax bolted onto the mirror stay inside the screen so that it is kept away from most of the water and thieving scumbags.

Have always taxed mine as i cant be doing with the crap from getting done for no road tax for the sake of thirty odd quid. It would be my luck that they throw the book at me too. i keep my disc under my pillion seat, never had trouble with it in the past but i suppose it depends on what mood the law is in if i get pulled for roadside check. Have heard it is an offence to not show your tax but its each to thier own, i would rather not display than be untaxed tho .

pay it,simple as.

i was doing my mate a favour and pushing his broken scooter on the pavement to a lockup, didnt have the scooter keys on me and got pulled over and done for no insurance (6 points),even though i explained i wasnt the keeper, and couldnt ride it anyhow.
its really not worth it, if there not in a good mood.

Did it go to court?
I can really see the reasoning behind this on the police's side as firstly you were on the pavement and secondly you didn't even have the keys with you!

yep went to court.they didnt give me a fine or have to pay court costs, they were really nice about it really, think that had to do with me having a nice solicitor.
i was angry at the time as no one likes getting 6points on their licence, especially when your not riding it.
just pushing it to a lock up for him so it wouldnt get stolen.

points are still on my licence but glad to say only cost me £15 tax and £94 TPFT for my sr yamaha 125 recently.my vrf400 is in my boyfriends name, not ready for that one yet.

Well, lets think about this. 40% of bikes are not taxed, mainly because they will be either track bikes or seasonal bikes. For a lot, bikes are play things. 1 of my bikes is not taxed for the simple reason, that it's a track bike. I think it's a case of not being able to see the wood for the trees. Failure to have road tax is simply wrong. It will void any insurance as well being irresponsible. Failure to display is not that bad as the police can run your plate and that will tell them if you vehicle is taxed/MoT'd and you might need to produce your details at a local station.

If time and effort is spent by police in trying to source these non-taxed vehicles, IMO it's a waste of time and will return few results. More of the tax payers money wasted rather than policing other, more serious crimes.

The thing that gets me about this is the fact that the government is using the media to sway public opinion against us - sad but true. It would seem that the government actually listen too these Cycling/Road Saftey groups.

I'd expect it to be over hyped in this weeks issue of MCN.

I can appreciate that some bikes won't need to be taxed. Off road or track bikes. As stated a lot of bikes will be laid up for winter so the 40% figure isn't representative of the actual amount. Even if you read the BBC article you find that it's said to be higher 30's .... So it does seem that this figure is "spun" for the media.

It's not like road tax is spent on the roads in the first place, but maybe the Govt are suggesting people should be taxed even if your not going to use the road

The bottom line is the DVLA don't have a clue as to whats SORN or not and whats TAXed, and whos bike needs to be sorn ... bla bla bla - do you need to SORN a track bike if it cant get an MOT ? Who cares - the DVLA can figure it out even if it is there job .... all they discover is that the more advanced thier data collection becomes, the more the data proves that they are incompetent.

Go pull guys or dolls on two wheels on the road and ask them 'got tax ?' - I don't think 4 in ten will say no. 4 in ten in a shed maybe.

All these penpushers need jobs, and charity is good for the soul - so smile and give generously. Value for money is not an issue.

Wot IS that... musk??

My bro bought a CB-1 in bits a few years back. It was SORNed at the time he bought it and sat in his garage with the engine in boxes. He got done for no tax!!!

Apparently, if you buy a bike in bits you need to SORN is straight away otherwise you get prosecuted.

All this goes to show that the whole concept of road tax is plain stupid. If the government want to tax road usage, put the extra cost on fuel. That way we pay according to our mileage and the amount of fuel we burn.
