Hi there, hope someone can help. I've just recently bought a CB400 Project Big 1.It's my first bigger bike as I've just passed my test, however I've noticed that the gears are a bit whiney especially 3rd. Also when the engine's warm, in neutral when you let the clutch out the gearbox makes a slight rumbling noise like worn bearings is it easy to fix or is this just normal, louder noises from a bigger machine with a quieter engine?(bearing in mind my last bike was a cbr 125 r4 which created so much noise and vibration you couldn't hear anything other than the engine/exhaust)

Those are OK. As long as the bikes tranny NEVER pops out of 1st or 2nd gear which is common on 2nd hand bikes. But, if the whinning noise tends to bother you & you wanna double check eerything, do a service check of your front & rear sprocket teeth as well as the chain... just make sure everything is nice & snug. Good luck

my neutral rumbles slightly, and honda inline 4's tend to whine anyways.

Cheers guys that puts my mind at rest, the whining doesn't really bother me I actually quite like the sound of the bike, was just a little worried there might be something a bit sinister going on. Many thanks...

Wait till you put an aftermarket front sprocket cover on your bike, THEN you really hear that thing whine. I kinda like it.... It sounds like a Cars Supercharger kicking in....

Bwahahaha.... Not really Brother Seeb. Just wanted to share MY experience with the whining noise. Before, i thought it was backride babe doing it, but i lastly remember that she only does that noise in the bedroom!!!! LOL!!!

Aye check it every time I lube the chain, seems ok. The guy next door has a mate with the same bike, he reckons his makes the same noise and it's never given him any bother. Probably just me being overly picky.

my bike (CB-1) has a comparitively whiney 3rd and 5th gear. Never caused any bother, in fact I quite like the noise.

+ NC29 swingarm ('29 wheels soon), Quill T3 Ti, lots of black, blade rear hangers, beet rearsets, brembo brake. Top mods: BT45's, touring screen & rack with 50L box! Stolen recovered, scumbags best not try again.

Aye I know what you mean, it has kind of a jet engine type quality to it...I reckon it's just me being paranoid about noises, thats what happens when you buy a 2nd hand bike, cautious of every noise. It had a full service 300kms ago before I bought it from the honda dealer, also had an M.O.T 2 days ago and passed with flying colours, the mechanic reckoned that it was in cracking nick and sounded pretty sweet too apart from a ligtht ticking from the exhaust when cold, maybe a slight leak. disappears when warm though. A wee job for a rainy day me thinks.
