when i press the starter i just get a single "click" sound for each time i press start. tried everything, cant find a loose connection or any of the obiouse stuff. This problem started when I knocked it into gear with the side stand down, on probably the wetest day of the year so far (last weds)

im thinking the starter or r/rectifier could be fried. and Im thinking the r/r could be fried because i got a shock off it when i touched the bolt that holds it in place.
or could this mean a bad earth? I dont understand electrics at all

the worst bit is that im on a week and half holiday and my bike died on the first day

i used to get that, all it was was my battery terminals needed cleaning, if its your reg/rec your battery will be reading over 14v when at 6000rpm

Its the starter solenoid near the battery, you can try it by placing a screwdriver across both of the terminals ( batt positive in, and lead goin to starter) it should start then

If you have a multimeter use this simple flow chart (click on the link then on the link a the bottom of the page).... http://www.electrosport.com/electrosport_fault_finding.html

Takes about fifteen minutes to work through but has found the answer for me evey time, has so for always ended up as r/r

Also get some electical cleaner ( you can get it from Halfrauds) and spray/clean every connection while you're there

Good times!

after all that checking, cleaning connections and everything else i could find....
I figured out that if I roll the bike forward while in gear and release the clutch she starts easy (basically a very mini push start)

stuck starter, starter brush or something along them lines?

Always worth giving everything a clean though, can prevent further probs! I did it all and then found it was just the reg/rec!

Good times!

I'm getting the same thing; my CB400F2N started fine last week but now even jumping it from a known good car battery (300+ CCA out of a 4.0l Jag) just gives a click... I'll try bypassing the starter solenoid and see if that's the issue.

I've also saved that .pdf for future reference, looks like getting an older bike is going to introduce me to the joys of self servicing sooner than I'd anticipated

I had exactly the same problem a short while back, it was the starter motor brushes that were worn.
