The 4-1 section on my SF is looking a bit tatty so looking to remove it and spray it up. It looks like a simple bolt off - bolt on job, but.. are there any special seals or anything that join the 4 pipes to the cylinders that could get damaged or will there be no problems?

Thanks, Rob

It's stainless (this is on a CB-1 exhaust), but the welds sometimes end up looking untidy or rusty - they're not really rusty though, it's just the welds as they are a different alloy and suffer a bit of surface rust. A bit of autosol and a polishing mop will have it looking like this. Paint is ugly and will need re-doing every year.

If you are mechanically not sure of yourself, I suggest doing as much as you can on the bike. The studs often snap which is a huge problem and yes there are 4 "gaskets" in the engine that would need to be replaced (total abotu £6). Biggest problem would be if you broke a stud which is easily done and hard to fix.

Just get a polish attachment for a battery drill and clean it on the bike. Wheel xleaning acid will get it mostly clean, too.

are those downpipes painted?

If not and it's just weathering you should try autosol with an old toothbrush... That stuff works miracles (providing your exhaust doesn't have any rust on it).

Thanks for the advice. My downpipes are so dark and dull, I was convinced they were painted originally, but now I'm not so sure. I don't fancy sorting out broken pins atc, so I think I will try and do as much as I can in situ.
