hello all!
this is my first post, just got my CB400 a week ago, so im learning fast!
my battery got cooked yesterday (it bulged right out) so i got a new one and checked the voltage across it at high revs (cant tell exactly what revs cos my rev counter seems to have stopped working!!) and it rose from 12.5v at idle to 15.5 volts. i remembered reading somewhere here that that could be the reg/rect on the way out so rather than toasting another battery i took this off to have a look.
one of the connectors has melted so im guessing that its u/s. its a weird one though, it looks differant to the r/r ive seen for my bike listed on the net - i know understand that my bike was a jap riding school one as it has the redundant orange connectors under the seat?
the r/r i have on my bike has two connectors out - one with 3 yellow wires and one with 2 green and two red/white. seven out in all. Printed on the r/r is SH611A-11 then under that 3.6. ive seen one that looks similiar on http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/erol.html but this is closest i can find and is listed for an older bike. looks like it only has 1 green and 1 red/white out too.
stampted on the bike is NC23E-1451289 and its a 1994 CB400 super four 'project big 1' imported to the uk in 99. can anyone tell me which r/r i need to get and where i should go for it?
ive got some photos of the r/r which i could email but i cant seem to put them up onto here
many thanks all :-) ride safe

On the V5 does it state model as CB400 FI? Sounds like its the same as mine. Corresponds to an F2 I believe. |

i guess the next job on the list if this rec/reg works will be the rev counter.. kinda hoping thats intermittent and it'll just start working again tho ;-) |

the reg/rec came today (Electrex World RR63) and ive fitted it - all seems good! i checked the voltage at various revs and it never went much above 14 volts :) where the old three pin female connector on the bike had melted i just cut of the male on the r/r and used the crimped blue joiners to connect that set (the four pin was still ok so i reused that) ive used plenty of tape to make sure everything is well insulated cos i did notice that the old connector that failed had accumulated a lot of crud off the chain which couldnt have helped.
rev counter is working again - that turned out just to be a sticky needle!
the fan has broken away from its top and bottom joinings on the rad and so ive moved the earth for it onto the top rad bolt. fan works when bypassed to this but not when linked up so my next job when ive time is to wire in a switch to override the thermostat. shall i run this earth back to the battery neg terminal, just to be on the safe side? could anyone tell me if that earth for the fan is used by anything else too?
well, not bad for only having had the bike a week! i really feel im getting to know her! i guess this is the best way to learn ;) |

Tape is OK specially if its greenline (self-vulcanising tape) but heatshrink is the recommended option. No need to wire back to the bty, just any good earth, as the frame is your -ve earth rail. Check for good earth using DMM on Ohms setting NOT continuity (beep). Just use wire of the same rating as what it replaces is all. |

I would really recommend soldering the wires to the connectors for peace of mind, and also using a brand new connector/s (none at all is best).
The charging system is a weak point on many hondas, and could do with all the help you can give it, the connectors increase the resistance and can help kill the system later down the track. Ask any frustrated owner who has done exactly what you have only to boil another battery the very next day after fitting a new r/r.
Good work on the DIY approach! |
