I may as well get this started early so I can keep it updated from the start.

I currently have a Honda CBR400RR (NC29) it's a J reg and in good overall condition. However, as it is a 16 year old bike, things are starting to look and feel a little tired. My aim over the next few months is to take it off the road and give it a good going over, replacing and sprucing up bits and bobs as I go.
I'll be doing this on a relatively tight budget, so I'm not rebuilding the engine, but I will be doing my best to freshen it up and return it to it's former glory.

Here it is as it stands today (apart from I've now got a Blueflame Evo oval can on now)

The List
In no particular order:

Powdercoat wheels black.
New set of BT090 tyres.
Strip fairings and repair any dinks or scratches, followed by a thorough polish and wax.
Replace clutch and clutch cable (still on original clutch).
Remove and paint exhaust headers black with high temp paint.
Refurbish brakes front and rear, braided hoses and EBC pads.
Fabricate my own rearsets.
Degrease and steam clean engine.
Tidy up wiring loom - re-taping loose bits.
Attempt to improve airflow over Reg-Rec to prolong lifespan.
Fit CBR600 rear shock.
Rebuild forks with new springs.
Refurbish lower fork legs, polished or powdercoated black.
Polish top fork yoke.
Polish exhaust hanger.
Polish frame and clean up swing arm.
Powedercoat screen brace and kickstand black.
Stick a rubber foot on to bottom of kickstand to stop it scratching my drive!
Fit new bar ends.
Replace bulbs for fresh ones.
Re-assemble.
Have fun!.

So as you can see, it's a fairly extensive list, however most of the bits shouldn't take me that long and I'm hoping to have the whole lot done in a few (2 or 3) weeks over the summer.

If you can think of anything else worth doing while I've got it off the road, let me know.

I wont be starting for a while, but I'll keep you posted!

Most of your mods are aimed at cosmetically enhancing it, I reckon it looks pretty good right now. I would opt for a better reg/rec (i.e. R1/R6) rather than better cooling.

Chip away at that list and should be a sweet thing!

You're right Cammo, there's nothing there to make it go faster, only handle better and feel nicer to ride. I'm a virgo (ergo perfectionist!) so I hate having something niggling with my cars and bikes, like the rattle from the front mudguard and the bits of flappy tape I can see sometimes around the loom. After a bit of a thinking session I decided enough was enough and I was going to go to town on tidying it up.

It'll also make it easier to sell it on too.

Now hold on

"It'll also make it easier to sell it on too" You wont get back what you have put in to your bike. dont just do it to make it easier to sell as it will hurt when you do sell it.

Do it because you want to. i have put about £2000-£2500 in to my CBR. and if i was to sell it now i would get £1000-£1500 for it.

But by all means go for it, i did it in the winter and put most of what you are doing plus more on my bike and it is a dream to ride now and makes me smile every time i rid it.

more so i cant bring my self to track it so i bought a VFR 400 for the track.

Cbr 400, gone to a good home, Track VFR gone, Just left with my Yamaha Thundercat. Im still going to hang around.

Don't worry I didn't say I would get more for it, just that it would be a selling point.

They were taken with a Canon 300D, not so fancy, but the lens was my Canon 24-70L - http://www.microglobe.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=143_155&products_id=1026&gclid=CPO9vcmvp4wCFQNQEgodHw--6g

Is there a site where I can see exactly what I'd need to replace when doing my forks, or could somebody give me a list of reccomended replacements?

http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/cgi-bin/dss2-cgi/Catalogue.pl

best and cheapest place to get original honda bits n bobs, (better phoning if you cant see what you need oon that list)

http://shop.wemoto.com/index.dyn?oid=25324

best place for aftermarket parts.

by all means if your fork bushes are good i wouldnt bother replacing them. (although they can get damaged when replacing the fork seals.)

i replaced

dust seals
oil seals
upper bush
lower bush
oil

you wil find all the bits on either one of them sites.

i wouldnt polish the frame, really bad idea, and you will regret it it. might aswell but autosol shares now lol
i would powder coat fork lowers and yoke in a gunmetal grey.

If you run bollock naked through town with a dildo hanging out your hole you'll turn heads too...

Spray the hugger and chain guard black, looks alot nicer. I also did my heel plates but it's started to wear off. so i'm gonna make me some new ones. I'm going shiny!

Already sprayed the hugger black Nasskau, but I will be doing any bits of black plastic that are looking a bit tired!

Not sure whether to get the fork lowers powdercoated gunmetal grey, black or polish them...obviously powdercoating would be the best option for it's hard wearing properties - does anybody have photos of a CBR with dark coloured lower fork legs?

I was thinking about doing the top yokes black, either powdercoat or paint (possibly paint so there are no clearance issues with the fork legs themselves).

New chain and sproket might be a good idea too.

OK just spotted that in the second pic.

I would have the forks powder coated but not as dark as gun metal grey, something closer to the origional colour. As for the top yoke tone down the heavy grain then bring to a nice shine with a bit of autosol. I wouldn't go black, looks god damn awful. have a look at the rothmans thread in the VFR section, thats one mean top yoke.

I don't understand Nasskau, you say don't go black then link to a "mean top yoke" which has been sprayed black!

I'm itching to get this started now, it's just a shame that I don't have the time at the moment to do it.

VFR yokes are black as standard. Edit: The yoke on the finished rothmans is polished.

I've had polished but I would prefer black just for the low maintenance (keeping shiny!) side of things. My brother polished the frame on his nc30, came up sweet, but he regrets it for the upkeep needed!

I started the thread because I wanted somewhere to think out loud. Plus this is more of an incentive to get it started because yappy Aussies will start giving me jip for not getting it done ;)

Yes firstly the yoke was resprayed black, then polished to a mirror finnish and thats what I call mean. scroll down the thread and look at the finnished pics.
you could annodise it clear once polished, save all the agro of polishing every week.
