As advised by my mechanic who has tried and tested this method.

A few pots of Humbrol enamel paint used to paint models.

I bought 4 pots of pink paint for a few quid, its a tough paint, doesnt chip easily and gives a smooth even finish when applied with just a paintbrush. Its also available in an array of different colours. Dries easily and quickly too.

I am having tyres fitted and a service on the CBR next week so while my mechanic is servicing the cibber hes gonna take the wheels off and give me them to paint. By the time hes finished the service the paint will be dry and the new tyres can go on - sorted!

And 4 pots is more than enough to paint both my wheels, although mine have polished rims so I just have to do the centres.

Thought I'd share this with you if like me you dont have the money or time to send your wheels off to be powder coated

Or use plastikote from b+q, homebase, wilkos, etc. Five quid each for primer and paint (one of each will easily do you), spray a few coats of each, done. Rock hard (its also enamel like humbrol) and gives good results as long as you cleaned the wheel well. It will chip but not too easy. EG, by clumsy bashing of wheel against caliper, that will chip it. Also goes on easier than brush-on paint, i would argue.

i would always get them powder coated for the perfect finish, i would never paint them with a paint brush!! but if your confident you can always give it ago!

id get wheels powder coat if it was me as that is more durable
painting you would need to work very hard to make sure to remove any brush strokes
spraying would be better if you really wanted to do it yourself.

Its relativly cheap in aus to get a wheel powdercoated, as little as $40AU a wheel. Heres a front wheel i just got which is done in black gloss powdercoat.

Hey Scotty! yeah i finally managed to bag one. i think im going to keep the old 3 spoke front/rear as they are in real good nick might use the front for track days if i ever get slicks. Got real lucky with the front wheel its in perfect nick with fresh powdercoat and was so cheap!!

Well youve seen the rest of my bike so I think a few paintbrush strokes on the wheels arent gonna tarnish its image

I'll post pictures when I've done it.
