 fitting new chain and sprocket

well, removing the old one.

according to haynes.
first up it says remove the speedo and sprocket cover OK.
then it says remove the swingarm
to do this it says remove the rear shock
to do this it says remove the exhaust.

am i taking the whole bike to bits?

is this all really necessary? is this what everyone else has done?
any advice gratefully received.

Also new chain is triple S with 108 links, how to remove the 4 uncessesary ones, so i'm down to the required 104.

C/S change should take no more than an hour and don't do it according to the Haynes manual, within the last month I've done 3 NC's c/s (mates RVF, my road VFR and track VFR). First off, do you have a chain breaker/riveter? If no, then buy one first. After that take off the front sprocket cover, you then need a 14mm socket to take off the front sprocket nut. Get a mate to press down on the rear brake as this is a difficult nut to get off. That's the hard work done. Slacken, but don't remove the rear sprocket. Now use the chain breaker. Remove the old chain and then both sprockets. Fit the new sprockets with the groove on the rear sprocket pointing towards the wheel. Loosen the 17mm pinch bolt and rotate the hub clockwise to the point where the new chain will meet without any hassle, use the chain riveter to press the chain together then tighen everything back up again. Job done with the swingarm, shock and exhaust all still in place.

As for taking off 4 links, you'll need a chain breaker.

take it to a shop and pay £15 to get it fitted is what I would do. If you don't have the right tools for the job, then not worth a botched attempt mate.

you do not have to take the swingarm out - seeing as you have an old chain, grind it in half.
Would also advise, if you have non std or plan non std sprockets, that 106 will do you nicely as you can get 43-44t rear sproclets on it nice and easy.
