Hi All As you can tell I'm a new to this site and was wondering if anyone has a good working order engine for my (FZR-400-3TJ) You see got the bike about 3 years ago as a none runner / project . But it did run but had a bad water leak. I managed to fixed this with no problem however when I got the thing up and running there was a tapping sound. Now I am new to the whole bike thing and not very mechanically minded and have now been waiting for a mate of mine to come and have a look at it (yip for the last year) so you could say that I kind of lost all interest oh and there was the time issue thing! Oh and the wife thing also (you got to finish the house off first) . But have now found time to get it sorted out . So if any of you fellow owner have any part's you want to sell let me know please. The sad thing is that I have never even ridden the bloody thing. How sad is that or should that be how sad am I |

Is the tapping sound definately coming from the engine, First thing i'd check is the exup valve, it's located in the exhaust under the engine. The bushes sometimes wear or the cables may need adjusting. If your lucky it may just be that. To make sure get a long screwdriver, put the handle to your ear and the blade on the valve housing or wherever you think the sound is coming from, This should help you locate the noise. |

Firstly may I thank you for your quick reply's. Hi Dobbie I did have a go at that but could not seem to locate exactly where the noise was coming from but I did not think to check the valve unit. I will try that at the weekend . I was also thinking that It could be a sticking valve as it does not sound like it's in the bottom end it's more of a tappet like noise what do you think? Hi Evil yip it sure does run (after I fixed water leak)but not sure if it pulls gears as I have never ridden it :-( It ticks over fine and dandy but you can here the tapping. |

f it was a valve it would be tapping at 1500 times a minute ... If it's a kind of small bang / pop that's more prsent at idle I'd say it's the EXUP.
Where abouts are you based ? |

No It wasn't me, I have lowered my 3tj for my missus to use and it's to small for me. I just ride my R6 now, well I did until I highsided it. Beware of the last S bend near Wrightington country club (the road that brings you out near the speed camera. The tarmac was caked in dried crap and the road surface is really shiny. You can probably still see the clearing in the undergrowth and the flat wire fence, Ouch! Did you find your rattle? I got my 3tj cheap because the engine sounded knackered. It sounded like a little end rattle or something but it was just the exup valve bushes. Hopefully thats all that might be up with yours. If you take the chrome cover off the side of the valve, then when it's running put a bit of pressure on the exup valve pulley and see if the rattling stops. If there is side to side play in the pulley it's the bushes, if theres no play but the rattling stops when you hold it then it would just need the cables adjusting. |

Flipping heck Dobbie are you ok? How bad was you hurt if you were? Also how bad is your bike ?????? I do know where you mean though, that road has sucked for a number of years now. It’s a bad road for s**t and diesel.(and the fuzz.) I am going to get a new battery tomorrow and fire the beast up as I am off on Thursday and Friday due to a bad hangover either way , and not wanting to the Everton ions if the pool lose tomorrow !!Bricking it!!. I will try and finish off putting the bits back on and the try and get an mot on it.

I'm alright thanks, I landed on my shoulder and had a sore neck and shoulder for a week or two but i'm o.k. I damaged the top fairing and screen, both side fairings,Snapped the rearset off, snapped the fairing bracket, knocked the wheel out of alignment and a couple of other bits and bobs but i'm sorting it. Just my luck, you wait for the good weather and then end up smashing it up! There's a good mot place in standish, on the left as you head towards Chorley. He's a nice chap and a biker. It's about 300 yrds through the crossroads in the middle of standish.
