Hi All, Both my rear shocks are leaking on my cb400sf (93), they don't feel that different though. Do I really need to change them or will they do or has anyone out there ever replaced their's with a different type? if so what they like? Thanks, Ian.

For my CB-1, it didn't so much start or stop leaking as suddenly let go of all it's oil, pretty well all at once. Which is of course very nice of it. Bizarrely I never noticed the event, as in there were no butt-clenching corner moments, since it was somewhere in the middle of a 45mile straight - the a3 portsmouth to Guildford.
First I knew of it was when I realised how bouncy the bugger had become the next day. Got off and it was like a pogo stick. It is positively dangerous to ride a bike with no rear damping. I couldn't go over about 80mph while I had to carry on with it in there, as the whole plot bounced around like a right pig.
Once the oil's all gone, your's'll be the same. Dangerous. It'll never pass an MoT like it. Get it fixed ASAP. |

Can you suggest any others? I saw a pair of shocks of ebay the other day, all the measurements were the same but they were for a susuki 1400, they did have infinite adjustment though and they looked smart. Ian.

re: GSX1400 shocks. the bike alone will weight a good bit more - talking easy 40-50kg. however, if you then put it one the lowest preload, you might still be OK? And if they go cheaply, could be a winner. And they're Öhlins branded, aren't they? |

Ian,
You can have the rear shocks off of my CB400 SF for nothing if you want? . What do you think 'a morti', do you think he'd want them
Ian.....to see what I'm on about go to my 'Throttle cable help' thread in the WORKSHOP forum.
a morti....thanks for the points of what you'd do. I've recently had the forks off to change the seals.....I think you can just make the new ones out . I know, I've let it go a bit......AND I'm the first owner since it was imported!
Cheers,
Graeme |

Wow Hendo, where has your bike been? Thanks for the offer mate but I think your best keeping them if you’re using the bike as a hack. I do need to get some soon as I'm off on a weeks trip into Wales, Cornwall and back up to the lakes, the bikes going to be fully loaded, I'll keep searching and let you all know what I come up with. Thanks, Ian.

I just fitted a pair of GS1000 shocks to mine. The bushes from my old showas fit straight in. They are a bit longer and a bit harder than the originals but at £5 off Ebay I couldn't turn them down! Lucky for me they were local too. |

Had them on for a week now and they have settled down nicely. Handling is spot on and the bike turns quicker due to the higher rear end. |
