took my test the other day, did really well, got six minors. had a great ride did everything right (ish only six minors though!!) examiner failed me on my life saver before my u-turn. aparently i didnt move my head round enough! im not a bloody owl i cant move my head 180 degrees backwards. if i could i would be a freak and work in a circus. when in the real world do we do u-turns anyway? why cant we give it some winkle pull a stoppie and swing the back end round? its in control and one movement? and you cant put a foot down.
if any one else failed what did they fail for?

When I took mine we did a two part test. The first was similar to CBT think. We rode through and round cones in a carpark. The second was an "obserserved ride" ... the examiner walked about around on the course. I passed both.

Failed my car test twice though. Speeding, improper use of the mirror (cos I had it adjusted so I didn't need to move my head) can't remember the others.

Not sure about the stoppie swing technique I favour the dougnut / rolling burnout.
Still chin up you'll nail it next time

I failed twice to start with both due to other peoples mistakes (yeh i no)

1> A lorry pulled out of a side road when I had right of way - I stopped cos he otherwise would have hit me - Stop on test = instant fail. Doh and Grr!

2> A car stopped dead in a narrow road that i was following. Car had right of way, but flashed an oncoming car half way through it. I hit brakes on, still had a good 2 metres distance behind the car, didnt skid, but "forks dived, and therefore you had to hit brakes hard and therefore not paying attention"

I was paying attention because I stopped with enough room, and enough control I thought. Argued my case to him and he just sid Meh Basically.

Oh well passed with 2 minors,

One was i did a mirror check as I pulled off in a traffic queue, not before pulling off. Other was on a quiet road I looked right then left then moved, not right left right.
NO one ever comes down theree, even the examiner agreed on that lol.

With the u turn, its easier to look whilst stationary ( actually swivel in seat to look up and down road), pull of and go a few metres then life saver again before doing u turn. They do quite like this as 2 checks in one manouvere.

Also my life saver is kinds behind but also look slightly down as well. This angle allows you to look farther up road, try it, or watch other bikers doing it too.

Good luck and shout if unclear (?!)

My wife is currently doing an intensive course and she said her instructor actually gets her to take her right hand off the throttle and place it on the grab rail of the bike when making the rear observation before a u turn, I suppose it gets you in the habit of making a clear observation and the examiner couldn't argue with that.
I passed with one fault, for use of speed ( I swear i'd only had redbull!!) My instructor told me they are really looking for confidence and not to hang around but I got a little carried away and for a split second did 35 in a 30, Passed though.
Good luck anyway, I'm sure you'll be o.k. next time, I know sometimes it seems like it just depends on what mood the testers in but all the testers are bikers and i'd like to think that as long as your safe they would want to get you amongst the ranks.

i passed first time with 7 minors, my little cg was *Censored* for indicating, there was a 3 second pause before they fired up lol, he got me good with that, its something i couldnt help, i did everything else fairly fine, i cant remember what else he got me for but it really doesnt matter how many or how little minors you get as long as u pass, the takin hand off the throttle thing was funny, they cant complain when you do that, could they? might say u dont have control or watever, hope she passes dobbie (or has she passed? and just training?)

bollocks to that!

I passed with no problems at all, my instructor I remember having a GSXR1100 (this is very long ago in the big is beautiful days). On the old part one you had to accelerate to about 30 and then stop with your front wheel in a 1m x 1m box of cones. He Hoiked it up from a standstill, proper height, let it down and then stoppied with great skill to the bang centre of the cones. Git wouldnt let us try it though!!

He gave us some cracking advice.

ME - How fast will it go mister?
HIM - When I'm teaching you lot I once got into second gear.
ME - Seriously?
HIM - Faster than you can imagine. But remember kids, whem I'm doing one hundred and forty miles an hour I'm thinking at one hundred and forty miles an hour.

I dont know why but thats always stuck with me. If you look down and are going faster than you thought you ARE going too fast. You should be thinking fast enough to know exactly what youre doing.

Keep it real!

Now then Wolfie, I did say before a u turn, You know when you are stopped. I wouldn't recommend it when you were moving. She has passed today, she did a three day thing with west penine and did her test this morning. She's struggling a bit with my 3tj though, believe it or not I might have to lower it as it's a bit to tall for her!! So if you see a midget on a red and white 3tj flying past Rogersons, you'll know who it is. Just stay behind her, you'll be safer there!!

I took my test in the days when they used to tell you which way to go and walk through alleys to get to other parts of the route

Took a wrong turn and popped a wheelie (Examiner never saw)

The person taking there test after me had to redo it as the examiner walked out infront of the wrong bike for an emergency stop

when they do the e stop now they ask you to go round the block (do four lefts) which gives you a chance to practice before you get back to them, problem was i had to go round the block four times cos cars kept coming the other way, by the time i did one it was perfect

I passed mine first time with 3 minors two were 'cos i hit 32 mph in a 30 and one for accelerating too fast-i was going on to a dual carriageway from a roundabout and could hear my instructor in my head saying to me "if a vehicle is going slower than you and it's safe to do so--overtake" so i move out to lane 2 and nailed it to 70 my instructor said i only got a minor for it cos the examiner had to cog it down a couple on his pan to keep up! i took my test on a 600
